The very successful TRANSFORMATIONS Exhibition is returning for its third year to the Pennsylvania Center for Photography in Doylestown, Pa. and the Call Show More...for Photography is open! This year we are adding something different, so read on!
This unique, juried exhibition pays tribute to the vision and skills of photographers who freely express their creativity by whatever means they choose. If you have been rejected from other shows or have had your work questioned because you use textures, composites, filters, or any of the other wonderful tools available to create your own vision, then you have found your home! Welcome to TRANSFORMATIONS!

The show will feature the PCP's hallmark format of concurrently running both a traditional print exhibition as well as the very popular large screen digital exhibition for photographers who are too far away to deliver physical prints or who otherwise do not wish to print their images.
Now for what's new... After numerous requests, we are adding a new, separate "Unlimited Exhibition", which is open to any image that has a photographic basis. This section of the show will get its own large screen digital display in the gallery
and is the place for digital art, derivative images, phoneography, and any of the other manifestations of photographically based art.
To make the distinction clear, the original TRANSFORMATIONS Print and Digital Exhibitions remain as they always have been, the major components of the entry are expected to be the work of the photographer. Using textures, composites, plug-ins, paint programs, adding a bird or two are all fine, but the defining image elements have to be yours. The Unlimited Exhibition is just that - unlimited - do what you want as long as it has some photographic basis and doesn't violate someone else's copyright. It is its own category from an entry perspective and will be judged separately. It should be a lot of fun!
The Call for Photography is now open and will close on September 26, 2018. TRANSFORMATIONS will open on November 2nd and run thru Nov. 18th. Days and times TBD.
Historically, the show has drawn a significant number of international entries as well as submissions from 20+ states. The exhibition will be free and open to the public from November 2 to November 18, 2018.

Glencairn Museum mounts an exhibition of 20 paintings and drawings by the late Bryn Athyn artist and arts instructor Nishan Yardumian (1947-1986). "A Show More...Window to the Soul: Nishan Yardumian's Biblical Art" opens Sunday, April 22, during the Museum's annual Sacred Arts Festival and continues through Sunday, November 4, in Glencairn's Upper Hall exhibition space.
Yardumian taught painting in Bryn Athyn for many years, at both the Academy of the New Church Secondary Schools and Bryn Athyn College. A painter as well as a teacher, he was passionate about both professions. According to Yardumian, "Painting aims at the universal with the hopes that each individual can find his identification with it. Teaching aims at the individual with the hope of developing the universal."
Siri Hurst, Nishan Yardumian's widow, who owns many pieces of her late husband's work, says, "For the past five years, as I've taken a day each summer to archive Nishan's remaining art work, I noticed how he was drawn to the subject of 'heavenly appearances.' This theme coincided with my own philosophic reflections on how appearances reveal but also conceal, and this led me to suggest to Glencairn an exhibit that could include this theme.
"Two pieces in this exhibition are favorites of mine. I love 'Bethlehem' because it illustrates a story we can all relate to, of an idea-something of God-that is born within us. 'Annunciation to Shepherds' shows movement: Nishan saw the angel as 'appearing' and changing us, and the drama such change can represent.
"When I modeled for Nishan, I would watch his eyes. The intensity made me feel he was probing an idea beyond the observation. He often said, 'In the end it is not what we paint pictures of, but what we paint pictures from.' I think the key to understanding his art is to realize from what he painted.
"Nishan was deeply spiritual, and saw the discipline of painting and drawing as analogous to the struggle to see the truth. He said, 'Paintings don't re-direct the wind; they realign the heart.'
"He loved to paint stories from the Bible because of what they mean in our lives. Although religious imagery wasn't popular in the art world of his day [1970s and '80s], his work found a receptive home at Glencairn Museum whose mission supports an appreciation for our common spiritual history."
"Yardumian liked the idea that just as an artwork reflects and shapes the values of a home, a museum reflects and shapes the values of a community," says Dr. Martha Gyllenhaal, a close friend of Yardumian and currently Associate Professor of Art and Art History and head of the Art Department at Bryn Athyn College. She was exhibit coordinator for Glencairn's first solo Nishan Yardumian exhibition in 1987, a year after his death.
"So it is fitting that a number of homes have lent their cherished Biblical paintings to Glencairn Museum [for this exhibition]. Yardumian thought that attending an art exhibit is a reciprocal act between the artist and viewer: each brings their best self to the process, which results in a marvelous exchange of insights."
While there is no charge to view "A Window to the Soul," donations are accepted and access is included in tour and event admission.
Besides stated times, visitors may call for an appointment and when attending the Sacred Arts and Medieval Festivals. The exhibition is closed April 29 and May 26 for two concerts and on July 4.. ...Show Less

Henry Bayley Snell (1858-1943) was born and raised in Richmond, England but emigrated to the United States at the age of seventeen to study at the Art Show More...Students League in New York. Snell was an eminent landscape painter who specialized in marine paintings and was part of the New Hope School of landscape painters, first arriving in Bucks County to visit William L. Lathrop and his family. Snell and his wife permanently settled in New Hope around 1925 with Snell teaching portraiture at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, often supplementing students' education by bringing them to the St. Ives artist colony in Cornwall for the summer.
Snell's drawings and watercolors of his travels to Cornwall and beyond are a special part of the Michener's collection of impressionist works on paper. As many of these works on paper have never been exhibited at the Museum, Impressions on Paper: Henry Snell offers both a special glimpse at the treasures in the Michener's vault as well as a scholarly examination of a regional painter capturing impressions abroad.. ...Show Less

At the turn of the century, artists began to rebel against traditional modes of expression and exhibition. Although it is frequently associated with Impressionism, Show More...the Delaware Valley region launched some of the most important developments that transformed American art in the 20th century: the roots of the Ashcan School; the leading proponents of Precisionist painting; and some of the first artists to explore non-objective painting.
A remarkable gift of 27 works from Gerry and Marguerite Lenfest in 1999 enabled the Michener Art Museum to highlight the significant contributions to the development of modern art in America as seen through the prism of our region. Artists such as Charles Frederick Ramsey, Louis Stone, Charles Evans, Lloyd Ney, and Charles Rosen were actively engaged in the artistic dialogue that resulted in major shifts in American art at mid-century. For the first time in thirty years, these works will be on view together in one gallery, underscoring the lasting contributions of our region's artists to the evolution of 20th-century American art.. ...Show Less

Artist reception- Saturday, July 14th from 6 PM - 9 PM
Dating back as early as 100 CE in China, paper cutting began as a Show More...decorative folk tradition focusing on landscape and floral motifs. Moving to Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries, the craft evolved as a cheaper alternative than woodcarvings for home decoration with its height. Paper cutting arrived in the States with an influx of German and Dutch immigrants in the 19th century, and took hold in Pennsylvania. The practice is experiencing a resurgence with a contemporary reinterpretation and rising popularity among young talents. Artists Casey Lynch and Jessi Brown engage in the dialogue of present day paper cutting, by remixing old subject matter and techniques while pushing the art form forward with innovative styles and themes. Casey Lynch, a paper cutter from South Jersey, focuses on paper cutting's narrative potential and fantastical qualities. On the other hand, Jessi Brown, working out of West Chester, explores paper's expressive potential while also speaking to the process's tradition. The coexistence of Brown's traditional silhouettes, original compositions, and expressive portraiture speak to the modern practice of paper cutting which quotes is history but elaborates on its potential.

Open to the public; please join us for the opening reception for a first look and to meet the artist for personal insights into their striking work. Wine and light fare will be served compliments of awarding winning JPM Catering.. ...Show Less

Despite their differences in process, technique, and equipment, all four artists emphasize the power of photography to represent connection and to communicate an experience of environment, energy, and spirit.
